From Coral Gardens to Marine Life Incubators

Term2 is about the development of Marine Life Incubators as architectural organisms; in their growth each of the MLI will be supported by multiple systems or structures. Our task will be to design those structures, aided by digital and physical means.

To define support systems or structures I would like to refer to a book which a friend of mine has been recently writing on the subject:

‘Support Structure [stands] for what bears, sustains, props, and holds up. [...] for those things that encourage, give comfort, approval and solace; that care for and provide consolation for the necessities of life. [...] for that which assists, corroborates, advocates, articulates, substantiates, champions, and endorses; for what stands behind, underpins, frames, presents, maintains, and strengthens.[...] for those things that give in short support.’

Our main material support structure is constituted by the evolution of the coral garden into architectural skeletons, generated via mineral accretion. These skeletons represent the material substratum which will support and in turn will be informed by the development of:

- Energetic Structure
(capturing the living substances/fuels necessary for life on site)
- Social Structure
(generating participatory behaviour/urban life)
- Ecological Structure
(symbiotically supporting organic life on site)

Each of your projects should engage with all these structure although conceptually
with different weights and intensities.

Eco-machines v3.0: Dubai Marine Life Incubators

Inter 10 is an experimental unit and this year our urban laboratory will be the city of Dubai, where we will explore how architecture can co-exist and co-evolve with the natural processes of the local marine habitat. In recent years Dubai has been the site of a series of highly ambitious projects, among them groups of artificial islands built along its coastline. The construction of the islands has provoked strong protests from environmental groups, who are concerned about the loss of marine biodiversity. The local government has rejected these criticisms, claiming that the islands are promoting an enhanced experience of urban living through a more direct relationship with its marine ecology.

The unit will address this claim and convert it into a manifest ambition: the design of a marine biodiversity leisure and research centre. Acting as an incubator for urban life, this building will contain both an educational public space and a research centre devoted to the development of techniques and models for the regeneration of the coral reefs that perform such a vital ecological role (providing food and shelter for a wide range of marine species, preventing coastal erosion and supporting commercial fishing and recreational activities).

Students will start by working on material systems and experiment with the feedback loops that occur in every process of life. A dedicated workshop on ‘embodied intelligence’ will offer insights into the use of sensing and actuating mechanisms via both analogue and digital means (physical experiments and drawings). The project site will be ‘the World’, a $14 billion development featuring 300 individual artificial islands arranged to mimic the shape of the globe’s landmasses. In January the unit will produce a group installation, masterplanning the island and research centre. Individual projects will then continue with the detail design of the incubators and their testing models (through large maps and technical details). In the third term each student will produce a final model and video illustrating the real-time qualities and effects of their own ecoMachine (prototypes and video).

The unit field trip will take us to the city of Dubai, where we will join local students, dive the coral reef, collect material samples, measure environmental forces, visit the project site and explore the city’s iconic projects and attractions.

Bios

Marco Poletto and Claudia Pasquero are directors of the experimental design practice ecoLogicStudio. They have lectured and worked internationally, and have been AA Inter 10 Unit Masters since 2007. Claudia and Marco have also directed AA Visiting Workshops in Turin (Prototyping the City) and Istanbul (Fibrous Structures); and together with Marie-Ange Brayer they curated the AA Architectural Machines Symposium. ecoLogicStudio’s research projects have been exhibited at the London, Venice and Seville biennales in 2006 and 2008, and they recently completed a shopping mall eco-roof in Carugate, Milan.

Dr. Eyal Nir will be with us live form Tel Aviv via GoTOMeeting to give us a demonstration of the potentials of his new tool, Paracloud GEM2. GEM2 is a real solid pattern making machine! He will show us the functionalities of the tool and answer your curiosities. Please download the Demo verison from the GEM2 website and have a look at it. GEM2 runs for the moment only on PC, so whoever is interested in installing the tool should have his/her laptop in PC mode with the demo up and running on it.

Let’s imagine Oxford Street as a machine or a large and complex organism composed of a multitude of organic, inorganic and artificial devices:

Information, matter and energy flows trough without the capacity to re-circulate to grow articulation or complexity.

Choose between three types of playground:
_a metabolic energy machine [i.e. machine/playground generating energy and playfulness from body movements, buildings heat, Owens heat, trees transpiration etc]
_a machine for the amplification of local microclimate [i.e. machines/playground powered by microclimatic differentials; differentials in temperature, humidity, noise level, pollution, light, solar radiation, wind, etc]
_a machine for cultural re-cycling [i.e. machines/playground dealing with street performance, food production, cloths production, act]

Deliverance:
_cybernetic cycle (defining cycle of interaction machine/behavior/environment)
_protoBox (illustrating with max of 5 photos chosen game and chosen mechanism together with written brief -- max 50 words)
_3Dmodel (defining onsite actualization of the chosen mechanism -- sequence of at least 5 images from 3D model showing behavior)
